Pet owners shouldn’t only be concerned with color and style when picking out food bowls. Don’t let a fancy design and bright colors fool you into thinking plastic bowls are better than stainless steel dog bowls. The main points to consider in pet feeders are safety, durability and functionality. Most pet-supply stores will offer a selection of ceramic, stainless steel, glass, and plastic bowls.

Here are some things to consider when shopping for pet food bowls: ceramic bowls are not a good choice for outdoor dogs because in cold temperatures they can crack and dogs may swallow part of the bowl or be cut by a sharp piece. Plastic bowls get dirty easily and often are a breeding ground for bacteria. Many dogs may become ill from ingesting the bacteria. Some animals, like humans, have allergies to plastic. Stainless steel bowls are easy to clean, won’t crack and won’t tip over easily because they are heavier.
